Research abstract

Our Drone Recharging Operational Payload System (DROPS) permits the autonomous delivery of payloads forward by UAVs ¢ we donÆt make UAVs but the rather payloads and standardized interfaces that autonomously attach the payload to the UAV. Specific to this SBIR solicitation Āour Cargo Pods could deliver payloads up to 300nm in weights ranging from 150 to 1400lbs (depending on the UAV of choice and its payload capacity).Ā These Cargo Pods can be stacked like lego-bricks forming a heavy Āphysical barrier that could also be optimized with passive or active ISR sensors (acoustic, seismic, visual, EO, radar), with SATCOM connectivity, remotely activated explosives similar to a remotely detonated mine, or just dead weight (dirt) to form an obstacle. When stacked, the Group 2 and 3 Pods are locked together by an upper and lower recess and held in place by Electro-Permanent Magnets with a holding force of 150-600lbs depending on the requirements of each Pod. The activation of the explosive Pods could be triggered remotely by an Operator with SATCOM streaming of the various ISR sensors in the Pod, or alternatively the Pod could be autonomously triggered by acoustic signature recognition of an enemy vehicle, AI-based object recognition (such as audio or visual identification of an AK-47 for example) or other remote means.Ā The DROPS system permits the fully autonomous deployment, recovery and relocation of the Pods without any need for a forward deployed Solider to attach the Pod to the UAV.
