Research abstract

The USSF faces several challenges when it comes to supporting GCCs sand implementing the concept of "mosaic warfare,” which relies on multi-domain force collaboration. A complete picture of the operational theater of conflict must include land, air, space, and sea assets, which work in unison to support the warfighter during conflict. US DoD assets in the air, space, sea, and on the ground represent trillions of dollars and more than 1.4 million enlisted personnel. MS&A technology is required to effectively optimize and manage risk with the scale and diversity of capabilities in this “mosaic.”  Variable analytical representations of all assets within the operational domain are needed to support collaboration and mission success across all potential use cases of a mosaic warfare synthetic environment. This value can only be unlocked by integration of a vast array of descriptive and analytical models from across disciplines and domains. Engineering model integration and exchange is a fundamental barrier to the complicated decision making required for mosaic warfare. Connected data is ubiquitous today: from text messaging to personal finance, marketing, sales, gaming, and management. Meanwhile, engineering tools that drive the cost and schedule associated with the most advanced, complex, and essential physical systems today are still largely siloed and built on legacy desktop software architectures. Some of the most technically innovative engineering orgs are some of the least innovative regarding their processes and software tools. This is driven by the following challenges: Legacy Approaches, Misaligned Incentives, Big Swings, Complex Models The answer to the challenges identified above involve two main components: New interfacing tech to facilitate a graceful transition to more connected tools and models Digital twin software that can leverage these shared descriptive models to deliver deep analytics earlier in the system lifecycle Continuous integration of models across disciplines and lifecycle phases will enable processes that can bring to space system engineering what DevOps brings to software engineering – dramatic improvements in performance, collaboration, agility, and traceability. Further exploring this analogy, digital twins can serve the role of a software development environment for space system engineering – a tool where the entire team can individually evaluate the performance of their system in relevant operational scenarios.  Under the proposed effort, Sedaro will create/open source a software tool that will leverage the SysML v2 API and Sedaro’s modeling language, SedaroML to enable flexible, multipoint exchange of model information between disparate tools using disparate ontologies to represent – in part or in whole – the same information. This open-source software, tentatively titled ModEx, will deliver an interoperability and integration capability that is essential to addressing the challenges to model integration outlined above.
