Research abstract

As part of the SBIR topic AF233-0036, the Department of the Air Force (DAF) is seeking robust and resilient solutions to overcome Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) threats, protecting people, critical infrastructure, and military capabilities. DAF is looking to support research and development of new materials, such as nanocomposites and metamaterials, that demonstrate exceptional EMP shielding properties and can be integrated into electronic devices and infrastructure. Spectral Energies (SE), working with University of Dayton (UD), proposes to develop and commercialize an ultra-lightweight carbon-based nanostructure composite shielding material that can defend against Electromagnetic Interferences (EMI) and Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP). To this end, we will develop a low-cost and mass-production scale manufacturing by a one-step cold compression process at room temperature of flexible yet strong nickel foam and graphene composite (NFG) sheets.
