Research abstract
Corrosion of DoD assets is a continuous problem that seriously impacts cost and availability. We propose to take the Corrosion Modeling Toolset, an existing commercial product by Corrdesa and Siemens, modify it as necessary, and deploy it on the DAF DTO Launchpad for use throughout DAF. Although this Toolset is based on computational corrosion analysis, which typically requires computational specialists, it is designed to work from templates rather than CAD models, so that it can be used by engineers with no computational simulation experience. The Toolset has already been validated and used by the USAF CPCO at Robins AFB to solve a number of serious actual and potential corrosion problems on C-17, U-2 and B-21. This software will be demonstrated by CPCO at various DoD organizations and conferences, where it will be used to solve existing corrosion issues. More templates and materials will be added to solve the different problems that will be encountered in these demonstrations, making it possible to use the approach for almost any DAF corrosion problem. Capabilities will be added to incorporate the effect and degradation of organics such as paint stack-ups and CPCĺs, and to predict corrosion buildup as aircraft fly their missions around the world. A unique aspect of this proposed corrosion simulation deployment is that the tools are not just made available in a cloud platform but also within theáDAF preferred Product Lifecycle Management environment, that is, Siemens Teamcenter. This approach addresses several DAF strategic needs with respect to the digital transformation of the department. DAF staff working at any stage in a weapon system lifecycle will have access to the same data through the digital thread, minimizing repeat of errors and maximizing the benefits of learning and good practice as well as significantly compressing the time from requirements to the fielding of systems.á A number of OEMs have also shown interest in using the software, which will help to ensure that weapon systems are designed to minimize corrosion from the outset, reducing the lifetime cost and non-availability that corrosion commonly causes.
