Research abstract

Ensuring warfighters have potable water to drink, no matter their location, is paramount for domestic and international security. Hydration is a key health concern for all airmen and soldiers, and when executed properly enables peak performance. A known solution to successfully and reliably treat water enables clear readiness to deploy and fight for all airmen.á Iodine tablets have been the standard treatment method for non-potable water in austere conditions for decades but needs to be replaced. Chemical additives cannot treat a variety of contaminants or saline water and they create a bad taste/odor. While there are many human-powered water purification devices on the market, there are no modular systems adaptable to a given source of water for the Department of the Air Force (DAF) to guarantee the hydration needs of its airmen are always met. The Personal Modular Purifier (PMP) is a human-powered water purification device for the survival of an individual warfighter. The PMP utilizes high precision manufacturing techniques, advanced membrane technology, and modular design principles to provide a robust solution to replace the decades old use of iodine tablets.á Utilizing a standard product with swappable modules allows the user to adapt the purification strategy to address whatever contaminants may be present.áá This creates regional adaptability and quick system maintenance.á All over the globe, there are varying type of water impairment and quality - having a flexible and universal water treatment option ensures the capability of global strike, regardless of location.á In-house, six axis CNC machining enables Amorphic Tech to produce a commercially ready product, that can be manufactured at volume.á A Phase-I type feasibility study was completed by producing several prototypes, and proved that the PMP is a viable water purification device and able to produce potable water from muddy river water. Phase II development will improve the performance and durability of the PMP across all water conditions through real world testing and user feedback. The manufacturing process will be streamlined to maximize quality and economics.á With in-house manufacturing, successful demonstration of the product in Phase II can smoothly transition to contract fulfillment in both the military and private markets.á
