Research abstract
In partnership with KBR we propose to modify, condition and adapt real 2D and 3D space data currently being used at the Joint Task Force Self Defense (JTF-SD) Joint Commercial Operations Cell (JCO) supporting the National Space Defense Center (NSDC) protect and defend mission and project it immersively onto a large dome 3D surface with an integrated user interface to arrange data where it is most appropriate. Types of scenarios that are planned to be visualized include adversary engagement with high value asset satellites, theater or Area of Operation (AOR) specific overhead satellite coverage, and domain laydown of space sectors showing protected and threat objects and the interaction between them.á Technological advances will be required to increase the ôblack offsetö inherent in the use of projectors (no black is truly black in the presence of light).á We will also need to parameterize the shape of a dome structure so that overlapping projections can be calibrated, aligned, warped, blended, and rendered with the precision required for military operations (true 3D not just wall papered).á This is critical so that virtualized data can be orientated and projected correctly from an independent or dependent viewpoint as required.á The entire process will have to be at a speed that keeps the system in operations greater than 98% of the time which is the value proposition of the underlying proprietary automation software. We envision the Space Training and Readiness Command (STARCOM) equipping Space Force Delta units and training centers with immersive domes to train Space Force Guardians as the natural progression in the evolution of Space Force Operations. A dpi of 35 gives an image clarity and crispness while a lux of 200 tests the limits of human perception and allows comfortable visibility even in the presence of some ambient light. This proposal will deliver a 16ĺD dome prototype of 300+lux, where the dpi can change from 24 to 34 as the number of projectors on the dome change from 4 to 8 respectively. It will be integrated with multi-source 2D and high quality 3D rendering data from KBR demonstrating a fully operational Space Domain C2 center in a formfactor just about right for training applications. This will be achieved using 4-8 4K projectors placed around the rim of the dome to illuminate the whole of it and deliver a high resolution bright imagery. The 4K projectors will be driven by a single node to provide high frame rate (30-60 fps) of 3D space data as well as 2D real time visualizations.
