Research abstract

This project will modify Recon-RFÆs Commercial-Space SATCOM radio frequency integrated circuit (RFIC)Āpower amplifier (PA) products for use also in next-generation Air-Force Communication End-Systems at the Ku operating frequency band (12-18 GHz) ¢ a band where both Commercial/Non-Defense and Air-Force/DoD end-systems operate within. The RFIC-PAs will be adapted specifically for next-generation Air-Force High-Capacity Backbone Networks by applying semiconductor/RFIC-PA design techniques at the very forefront of academia and commercial-wireless research and development activities - to achieve industry-leading efficiencies. The modified RFIC-PA products will achieve state-of-the-art efficiencies greater than 50% - at-least x2 greater than incumbent solutions; enabling massive size, weight, cost, and power savings while ensuring the highest achievable output power and corresponding communications range for Air-Force End-Systems and End-Users. The needed modifications are a slight change in frequency, also at Ku-Band, and lower output power requirements; hence, the risk is relatively low to modify the non-defense Commercial-SATCOM solution for Air Force/Defense communication end-systems.
