Research abstract
Fluidic systems in aerospace applications require reliable and secure fittings to ensure proper sealing and prevent leaks under high-pressure conditions. Traditional fittings face challenges in achieving accurate torque application and providing visual and tactile indication of proper installation, leading to potential overtorquing or under-torquing issues. To address these challenges, our proposed solution incorporates shear pins into the fitting design, offering a novel approach to verify torque and enhance installation reliability. Ā The current issues with traditional fittings include the lack of a definitive torque verification method and the absence of visual and tactile confirmation of proper installation. These limitations can result in compromised sealing, leading to fluid leaks and potential system failures. Our solution overcomes these challenges by incorporating shear pins into the nut of the fitting. At a specific torque threshold, the shear pins break off, allowing the nut to continue threading onto the fitting while retaining the broken portion threaded onto the outer part of the fitting. This configuration forms a double seal, consisting of a primary metal knife edge seal and a secondary o-ring seal. The continued threading and locking of the nut provide visual and tactile indication that the fitting has been properly installed, and prevents vibrations from loosening the fitting. Ā The proposed solution offers several benefits. Firstly, the shear pins ensure the application of the correct torque, preventing both under-torquing and overtorquing scenarios. This helps maintain consistent sealing integrity and reduces the risk of leaks. Secondly, the visual and tactile confirmation of proper installation improves reliability and ease of maintenance, allowing operators to quickly identify and rectify any incorrectly installed fittings. Thirdly, the double seal design enhances the sealing performance, ensuring robustness and longevity in high-pressure aerospace fluidic systems. Finally, the outer sleeve of the nut shears off the inner portion, and continue threading onto the fitting, providing a vibration resistant locking feature Ā By addressing the limitations of traditional fittings, our solution meets the customer's needs for enhanced reliability, torque verification, and installation confirmation. The shear pin-based design provides an innovative and effective solution for aerospace fluidic applications, offering improved sealing integrity, prevention of overtorquing, and simplified maintenance procedures. The proposed fitting design aligns with the objectives outlined in the original solicitation, providing a technologically advanced solution to support aerospace fluidic systems and meet the rigorous demands of the customer, ultimately enhancing overall system performance and safety.
