Research abstract

The feasibility study at the core of this STTR will demonstrate and validate software (the Software) to transform mobile devices into highly-capable 3D Scanners for Reverse Engineering & 3D Printing (the Systems). The Software includes a 3D scanning application (the App) enabled by the Quidient Reality® Generalized Scene Reconstruction (GSR) software platform (the Platform). The GSR Platform utilizes cutting edge innovations in 5D scene reconstruction (5D = 3D geometry + 2D light flow) to create digital models of objects. Quidient Reality is a high-accuracy, complete, and easy to use solution. The App will generate digital twin models accurate enough to reverse engineer objects of interest to the USAF. The Platform can run on standard mobile devices (e.g., smartphones, tablets) in the field. Coupled with onsite 3D printing technologies, the App will support USAF additive manufacturing capabilities in maintenance depots, FOBs, and more.
