Research abstract

The Phase I EMARC prototype is configured to be a fully functioning machine shop. It provides the operator with unprecedented maintenance and repair capability in a truly self sustaining portable and modular system. A very large suite of machining equipment is strategically positioned inside the main room to provide maximum flexibility for a variety of maintenance and repair tasks. Included are a welder, plasma cutter, CNC machine, lathe, mill, band saw, grinder work benches and secure storage for tools and supplies. Bright LED lighting provides plenty of illumination for all work tasks. The proposed Phase II effort includes maturation of the first prototype, construction of a second prototype, which is the paint shop evolution.  the second EMARC prototype is envisioned as a paint shop in which a variety coatings can be assessed, repaired, removed and reapplied as needed. As such it will utilize the EMARC compressor and pressurized air system to drive coating removal tools such as rotating grinders and the coating applicators (paint guns). Inside the structure, a tool cabinet with all required coating removal and applicatoin tools will be provided. This includes personal protective equipment and a breathable air system. Additionally, benches for mixing multi-part coatings, shakers, and high intensity lighting will be provided.
