Research abstract

Modern MILSATCOM gateways are increasingly exposed to agile, protocol-aware jamming and to spoofed ground terminals that masquerade as authorized users. Current mitigation is largely manual: an operator notices a drop in carrier-to-noise, hunts for the source and commands a reroute—often a minute or more after the first packets have been lost. ORION introduces a software-only gateway plug-in that automates that entire loop. The system taps the digital intermediate-frequency stream already present in virtualized ground stations, converts it to a compact time-frequency representation and applies a lightweight machine-learning model to classify the signal. If the model detects interference or an unrecognized transmitter, ORION issues a standards-compliant control message to the gateway’s network controller, instructing it to shift the carrier or change the forward-error-correction rate. The closed-loop response completes in well under the two-second window identified by Space Systems Command as the threshold for maintaining continuous service.
