Research abstract

Modern MILSATCOM networks are under increasing pressure to remain secure, adaptive and operational across contested, degraded, and denied environments.  Current architectures are constrained by rigid, hardware-bound designs, centralized ground infrastructure prone to single points of failure, and fragile data flows vulnerable to disruption and cyber threats.  As adversaries advance their electronic warfare and cyber capabilities, these vulnerabilities create unacceptable risks to mission continuity and operational effectiveness. To address these challenges, the Department of the Air Force requires a resilient, software-defined, and distributed architecture that can:Reconfigure MILSATCOM networks dynamically using virtualized, hardware-agnostic components (Focus Area 1: Network Virtualization)Decentralize ground infrastructure to preserve operations during kinetic, cyber, or environmental disruptions (Focus Area 2: Resilient Ground Architecture)Maintain secure, efficient, and fault-tolerant data exchange under degraded conditions (Focus Area 4: Resilient Data Management)Existing solutions often fail to enforce access control and data policy directly at the point of use, particularly in low-connectivity or contested settings.  There is a critical need for an integrated platform that treats enforcement, auditability, and system interoperability as foundational capabilities rather than peripheral add-ons.This creates a significant opportunity to introduce a next-generation MILSATCOM solution that embeds enforcement, resilience, and interoperability into the core of the system architecture.  A platform capable of virtualizing access control, embedding policy enforcement directly into smart contract-governed data flows, decentralizing decision-making, and maintaining secure data operations in real time, without relying on continuous connectivity or proprietary infrastructure, would directly address the Department of the Air Force’s operational needs.  Solutions that deliver these capabilities in a modular, scalable, and standards-compliant manner, while enabling interoperability across both legacy and next-generation MILSATCOM systems, are well-positioned to enhance survivability, reduce reconfiguration time, and ensure mission continuity across contested, degraded, and denied environments. GetChkd’s platform is technically mature and architected for Phase II demonstration in operationally representative MILSATCOM conditions, with a clear path to achieving TRL-7 through field validation.
