Research abstract

DeployX proposes a revolutionary plasma-enhanced electrically small antenna (PE-ESA) technology to enable secure wireless data transmission from tactical vehicles to command centers. Our innovation solves a fundamental challenge in military communications by using capacitively coupled plasma to achieve efficient, long-range transmission with minimal power consumption. The PE-ESA system enables reliable data transfer over distances of 10-40 miles while consuming just 2 watts of power, a dramatic improvement over conventional tactical radios that require 50+ watts. The core technology leverages plasma's unique electromagnetic properties to create a natural impedance matching system within a compact antenna design. By precisely controlling plasma parameters, our system achieves 115% measured 6-dB bandwidth and 15% radiation efficiency at 600 MHz, enabling robust data transmission even in challenging environments. The current prototype, developed under Office of Naval Research funding, demonstrates successful operation with a 40mm radius form factor that can be easily integrated into existing vehicle systems. Our Phase I effort will focus on adapting this proven technology for tactical vehicle integration and Army Vantage dashboard compatibility. Key tasks include optimizing plasma parameters for military environmental requirements, developing ruggedized packaging, and validating system performance for vehicle telemetry data transmission. The proposed work will demonstrate feasibility through laboratory testing and integration validation with sample vehicle systems. The PE-ESA technology offers several critical advantages for tactical vehicle communications: superior range and penetration through operation at lower frequencies, enhanced security through simplified architecture, and minimal power requirements that reduce vehicle electrical system impact. Its compact design enables straightforward integration while providing reliable transmission of both urgent status messages and routine diagnostic data. This innovation promises to transform how tactical vehicles communicate, ensuring commanders maintain consistent awareness of vehicle status while minimizing operational burden and detection risk.
