Research abstract

A need exists for inexpensive, disposable, broadcast capable chemical compound sensor systems with integrated site weather measurement. The state-of-the-art falls short in terms of chemical warfare agent (CWA) sensor cost/size and simplicity in the deployment system. To meet this ongoing need, ADA Technologies is developing a system comprising a suite of covert, modular, lightweight, rugged and easily deployed sensor pods for weather and CWA measurement. These sensor pods auto-network to relay spatially and temporally stamped data to a central command and control center. ADA will develop the system by leveraging team members’ work in three enabling technologies 1) ADA’s Situational Awareness Monitor, 2) small, low-power, low-cost gas sensor based on chemically sensitive polymer arrays, and 3) innovative, low-power gas-phase voltammetry sensor technology. Phase II efforts focus on development and test of a prototype system featuring new chemical sensor modules and customization of the SAM network for this application. During Phase II, the sensor technologies will be brought to Technology Readiness Level 6 and calibrated for a series of chemical agent simulants. A complete system comprised of 8 sensor modules, long-haul satellite communication module and control software will be tested and delivered to the government.
