Research abstract

ADA technologies has developed and matured a safe, wide-temperature range, and long life lithium titanium-oxide (LTO) based battery technology, which can be stored safely at zero (0) volt for long periods of time, without losing capacity. ADA-manufactured 0V cells are being integrated by battery pack manufacturers for implementation into military applications, such as replacement of Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) and lead acid batteries for Navy, Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center backup power and other applications. Under this program, ADA is planning to leverage our existing technology, in collaboration with Army Ground Vehicle Systems Center (GVSC) to address 24V battery needs for ground vehicle backup power, in addition to improving cold crank performance and safety/energy density of Type 1 6T batteries used for engine starting. Applications of our cells is expected to have a wide impact on Army operations through possible integration into BB2590, 6T battery packs and helping power supply requirements for applications such as emergency lighting and automatic fire suppression system (AFES) power supply. GVSC stakeholders (expressed in the proposal) along with ultimate TACOM customers are keen to replace Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries for several 24V backup power applications and our LTO based 0V technology has been identified as a key enabler to meet future vehicle needs including XM30, MPF, JLTV upgrades etc.
