Research abstract

Lack of accurate geo-positioning (GPS) information integrated within the miniature footprint of a wireless sensor handicaps rapid ad-hoc deployments. Self-mapping data analysis tools can not dynamically display measurements real-time. In a battlefield or situation requiring rapid deployment and situational awareness, this is unacceptable. ADA Technologies proposes to address this need by developing a system to gather information from ad-hoc networks of smart sensors for tactical display to decision-makers. This system features hardware modules that incorporate wireless communication and GPS capability with capacity to accommodate various sensor elements or instruments. Spatially tagged information is gathered via an ad-hoc network from these sensor and instrument modules distributed in a monitored space. A final element of the system is a software package that spatially integrates the data automatically for dynamic mapping, data presentation and sensor commanding. In Phase I micro and mid level sensor nodes that incorporate GPS information and transmit this information to a server that builds a dynamic 2D display of the network, sensors reading and data status was demonstrated. The Phase II full system will be realized including network and sensor data being presented dynamically an interactive 3-4D display from which the end-user can monitor data and control the network.
