Research abstract

In this STTR program, EIC Laboratories is teaming with the University of Florida (Prof. John Reynolds group) to design a new class of charge-transporting electronic polymers that exhibit a high degree of organization, leading to high charge mobilities. Furthermore, the structures will be highly crosslinked, which will make them tough and less prone to destruction by chemicals or in the space environment. The general approach is adaptable to a wide range of p-type and n-type charge transporting systems, and therefore is applicable to light emitting displays, photovoltaics and transistors. Phase I will entail synthesizing several examples of these crosslinked systems and characterizing their molecular structures. Carrier mobilities of selected materials will be evaluated in microfabricated thin film transistor test structures. In addition, time of flight mobilities will be measured to evaluate carrier transport through thethickness of the new materials. A goal for Phase I is to achieve mobilities similar to regioregular poly-3-hexylthiophene in the new crosslinked materials.
