Research abstract

This project aims to develop a novel dual-band detector capable of capturing visible (VIS) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) imagery in a compact, high-performance design. Traditional dual-band systems rely on separate sensors, increasing size, weight, and power (SWaP) requirements while introducing challenges in image alignment and fusion. The proposed innovation uses the spin Seebeck effect, in a Pt/YIG system, to create a broadband detector that eliminates the need for multiple sensors. This unique approach simplifies the design while maintaining high responsivity across the VIS and SWIR bands. The primary objective is to enhance the detector's responsivity to exceed 0.8 V/W. This will be achieved by using ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) to amplify the spin Seebeck effect and optimize the Pt/YIG interface for efficient spin current generation. Tasks include refining YIG thickness to suppress three-magnon splitting, tuning FMR conditions for maximum spin pumping efficiency, and implementing high-frequency light modulation for real-time characterization. Additional efforts will focus on developing a multichannel pixel design that incorporates three channels in the VIS range and three in the SWIR range, enabling simultaneous detection across distinct spectral bands. SLD Photonics will work with a contractor for designing a scalable multipixel array based on the performance of the single-pixel prototype. The array will address inter-pixel crosstalk, optimize readout architectures, and integrate spectral filters to ensure precise wavelength separation and uniform responsivity across the array. The result will be a fully conceptualized design for a dual-band imaging system suitable for military and commercial applications. The proposed detector aligns with the Navyís need for advanced imaging systems with reduced SWaP for compact platforms like submarine periscopes and off-board systems. This Phase I effort will establish the foundational design, performance benchmarks, and feasibility for full-scale implementation in subsequent phases.
