Research abstract

The United States Space Force (USSF) Medical Operations Directorate and other Department of the Air Force (DAF) leaders have identified a critical need for an objective, real-time system to monitor stress, resilience, mood, burnout, and fatigue among Airmen and Guardians. Current assessment methods rely on self-reported data and intermittent screenings, failing to provide timely and actionable insights that prevent cognitive degradation and mission-critical errors. Sustained space and air operations require prolonged cognitive endurance, but exposure to sleep deprivation, high-stakes decision-making, and operational stress leads to decreased situational awareness, impaired reaction time, and increased risk of burnout. To address this gap, Innsightful, Inc. is developing Innsightful-R2, an AI-driven, wearable-integrated system designed for continuous physiological and cognitive monitoring. Using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) wearables such as Garmin and Oura devices, Innsightful’s system analyzes biosignals to provide real-time insights into stress, fatigue, and mental resilience, enabling proactive interventions before performance degrades. A previous feasibility study using wearable biosensors demonstrated high predictive accuracy in detecting cognitive and psychological states, validating Innsightful’s AI-driven approach to monitoring stress, fatigue, and readiness. The Phase II effort focuses on refining, validating, and scaling Innsightful’s predictive AI algorithms for real-time stress and fatigue tracking across military environments. This phase will expand integration to Garmin and Oura devices, conduct large-scale usability testing with Air Force personnel, and ensure seamless compatibility with Teamworks, the DoD’s human performance tracking system. Key objectives include:Validating biometric tracking accuracy across multiple wearables.Assessing real-world usability in military environments.Developing AI-driven real-time alerts and adaptive interventions to support cognitive well-being and performance. Ensuring operational integration with DoD health and performance systems.By leveraging AI and biometric analytics, Innsightful-R2 provides an operationally scalable solution to enhance warfighter resilience, optimize personnel deployment strategies, and sustain mission effectiveness in high-stress environments.
