Research abstract

This project seeks to develop a next-generation 3D Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) processing algorithm, a cutting-edge innovation designed to address critical ISR capability gaps in contested environments. The proposed work will leverage advanced SAR imaging, non-linear synthetic aperture techniques, and AI-driven 3D reconstruction algorithms to create a robust solution that offers high-resolution, all-weather, real-time 3D imagery with significantly reduced latency and cost. The technical merit of this approach lies in its combination of phase-preserving SAR data processing and novel multi-view stereo integration, enabling accurate, scalable, and persistent 3D ISR for military operations. Objectives and Approach:The primary objectives include reducing the number of SAR images required for high-fidelity 3D reconstruction, decreasing tasking and processing times, and improving image resolution and accuracy. These milestones represent a clear, stepwise progression toward delivering a technology that exceeds current standards in ISR effectiveness, operational flexibility, and rapid decision-making.DoD Benefits:This effort directly supports the Department of Defense’s mission by enhancing situational awareness, enabling persistent surveillance, and improving targeting accuracy in GPS-denied or weather-obscured environments. Specifically, it will contribute to improvements in Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2), battlefield monitoring, and autonomous systems navigation, ensuring real-time intelligence advantage in modern warfare.Expertise and Team Strength:The project will be led by Dr. Jisu Ryu, a recognized expert in SAR imaging and algorithm development, supported by a team of experienced professionals specializing in radar engineering, AI/ML, and ISR analytics. The team’s depth in advanced SAR processing ensures the capability to meet the ambitious technical objectives.Commercialization Potential:Beyond defense, this technology has applications in autonomous vehicle navigation, critical infrastructure monitoring, disaster response, and commercial remote sensing. By providing cost-effective, high-resolution 3D imaging that outperforms airborne LiDAR, it addresses key market needs in precision agriculture, environmental monitoring, and industrial asset inspection. The commercialization strategy includes direct imagery sales, integration with existing geospatial analytics platforms, and licensing agreements with satellite data providers. This positions the technology to drive market expansion, reduce operational costs for commercial users, and accelerate adoption across multiple industries.
