Research abstract

Modern tactical operations demand resilient, adaptable, and cost-effective communications and sensor networks, particularly in contested environments. The proposed effort by OWL Integrations, Inc. advances TAK-integrated, distributed networking solutions leveraging DuckLink technology, a customizable and open-source-powered IoT mesh network. The DuckLink ecosystem provides a scalable, low-SWAP (Size, Weight, and Power) solution capable of integrating with USAF ground, air, and space assets to enhance tactical situational awareness, secure data transmission, and unmanned system coordination. The proposed research and development (R&D) effort builds upon the ClusterDuck Protocol (CDP) and advances the DuckLink family with new variants for increased robustness and operational effectiveness in austere environments. This includes SuperNode DuckLinks for extended tactical communication, SpaceDuck Terminals for LEO-based connectivity, UAS-Embedded MAVLINK-Integrated DuckLinks for real-time drone telemetry, and Machine-Learning Sensor DuckLinks for environmental threat detection. The project aligns with USAF operational imperatives, addressing the need for distributed, secure, and low-cost tactical networking solutions across multiple domains.Specifically, this AFX255-DPCSO1 SBIR Direct to Phase 2 identifies five technical objectives: Objective 1: SuperNode DuckLink for Tactical CommunicationsObjective 2: SpaceDuck Terminal for Low-SWAP Satcom AlternativesObjective 3: MAVLINK-Integrated DuckLinks for UAS-Based Tactical NetworkingObjective 4: Machine-Learning Sensor DuckLinks for Threat DetectionObjective 5: Final Deployment & Prototype Delivery for USAF End-Users The Evolved TAK-Integrated Tactical Distributed Networks through DuckLink project significantly enhances resilient, distributed, and low-SWAP networking solutions for USAF and allied defense forces. By advancing low-cost, open-source, TAK-compatible tactical networks, OWL Integrations enables secure, adaptive, and scalable communications across land, air, sea, and space domains. The proposed developments directly address critical DoD mission gaps, strengthening real-time situational awareness, unmanned system coordination, and survivability in contested environments. Successful delivery of this Phase 2 SBIR will provide USAF end-users, customers, and the TPOC with prototypes to evaluate as well as accelerate the transition of OWL's commercial technology to a defense-adopted solution.  OWL will share results with units throughout the US DOD that OWL actively collaborates with including AFSOC GSU, USAF Special Warfare 3rd ASOS, AFRL, and US Army Rangers. These units include ideal collaborators, customers, and end-users of OWL’s technology.
