Research abstract

This proposal outlines the development of an innovative distributed multiple-radar system designed to enhance radar coherence and accuracy through advanced signal processing techniques and the integration of low-cost passive phased-array panels. The proposed framework leverages a dual-radar signal processing paradigm to facilitate coherence preparation and maintenance, significantly improving data integration capabilities and overall system accuracy. Key innovations include clutter calibration, structure-based algorithms for parameter estimation, and refined sensor network calibration aimed at enhancing localization accuracy and phase synchronization. By evaluating the application of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) low-cost phased-array panels technologies, our approach aims to provide an effective solution that enhances the sensitivity and electronic protection capabilities of radar systems while reducing operational costs. The system will operate on X-band frequencies and utilize an array of receive-only panels, enabling distributed digital beamforming that can significantly improve signal reception and radar performance. The proposed multiple-radar architecture is designed to support auxiliary and multi-static distributed arrays, ensuring that the system exploits advanced coherence and synchronization techniques. This innovative approach will provide improved dynamic range and channel capacity, which are critical for modern radar applications. Phase I of the project involves developing a reference model for X-band COTS panels, conducting a comprehensive survey of existing solutions, and establishing specific array requirements. Additionally, we will produce a plan for constructing a sparse array test bed that incorporates multiple panels, complete with the necessary timing and control infrastructure.
