Research abstract

The DP-CQS prototypes will leverage advanced electro-optical technologies, including a two-dimensional micro-display combined with a low-power microcontroller unit to replace the traditional point light source in reflex or red-dot sights. This sight will permit operators to display a plurality of iconography onto a unity magnification see-through optics and select a variety of reticles that can be boresighted electronically instead of using mechanical adjusters to create a true athermal close quarters sight. The digital display with a microcontroller will also permit the proposed sight to connect with many external devices, through either wired or wireless interfaces, such as a laser range finder, to project ballistic solutions and disturbed reticles directly into the operator's field of view. The optical design of the DP-CQS will include a large clear aperture, providing a see-through field of view compatible with clip-on magnifiers and direct view. The prototypes will offer 0.5 MOA/pixel resolution, allowing precise boresighting and movement of on-screen symbology. ISS will follow a rigorous system engineering development process, including detailed design specifications, integration and assembly of components, and extensive testing and validation. The prototypes will undergo optical performance testing to meet brightness, reticle feature size, boresighting adjustment, and parallax requirements. Thermal stability tests will be conducted to ensure minimal thermal shift over the SOO temperature requirements. Environmental testing per MIL-STD-810 standards will verify the prototypes' performance in adverse conditions. Live fire tests using MK17 and M4 rifles will verify the prototypes' survivability and boresight retention.
