Research abstract

A major limitation of digital weapon sights for firearm applications is the insufficient brightness of the projected display and the short battery runtime. In this Phase I, we propose using holographic optical elements to increase the system optical efficiency. This has the potential to increase battery life by approximately three times compared to a weapon sight based on conventional optical coatings, while simultaneously maintaining high see-through transmission and minimal color shift. The primary objective is to combine these holographic optical elements with optimized low-power microcontroller architectures to analytically demonstrate a daylight bright digital projection close quarter sight (DP-CQS) with over 70 hours of battery life.
