Research abstract

The Digital Projection Close Quarter Sight (DP-CQS) solution aims to provide multiple bullet drop compensation (BDC) profiles in one package and integrate with tactical networks to exchange target data or ballistic solutions. The DP-CQS solution provides over 48 hours of runtime on a single battery, a larger viewing window than similar competitor sights, superior mechanical and thermal stability, and operator-configurable reticles via a wired or wireless connection to an Android Application on the end-user device (EUD). In Phase II, Wilcox Industries Corp. and partner Kopin Corp. will design, prototype, and test the Digital Projection Close Quarter Sight (DP-CQS) system. This non-magnified direct-view optic projects a digital reticle onto a transparent surface for the operator to aim through and stores multiple BDC profiles. The system allows the USSOCOM operator to customize the reticle to match their weapon system, eliminating mechanical boresight adjustors for a more stable design under shock and thermal stress. The DP-CQS system will meet or exceed all SBIR Phase II requirements. Phase I included trade studies on display technology, optical systems, runtime, and mechanical design, positioning the team to advance the design quickly in Phase II and to engage the government team earlier with hardware. This phase will focus on critical design, prototyping, testing, and operator engagement.
