Research abstract

Today’s battlefield is becoming increasingly complex and dynamic with more sensors and technology gathering data at an astounding rate and an ever-evolving adversaries. To maintain and ensure dominance, SOCOM warfighters could benefit from an approach to simplify, view, and customize weapon sights to rapidly engage single or multiple targets. Providing the ability to overlay preset or customizable reticles and range/ballistic data from other sensors is the ideal way to provide the warfighter with the familiar aiming cues and data from larger powered scopes in the form factor of a red dot sight. Currently there are numerous larger, more cumbersome built in display solutions, such as the XM157, and limited functionality red dot sites on the market, but nothing that combines the core functionality of both, small form factor and built in ballistic information.  Creative Microsystems Corp (CMC) has developed several Weapon Augmented Reality Displays for powered scope and red dots sights, which are daylight bright clip-on holographic displays that interface external data sources. The proposed display solution would be compatible with all legacy weapons via a picatinny rail mount. In a standalone application, the digital sight can provide preset and customizable reticles. It can also be paired with sensors based on documented ICD's, to display ballistic solutions, range, and even ATD/ATR information from external system. In both applications, the proposed weapon-mounted digital displays will be capable of overlaying the required aiming and/or situational awareness information in real time to the user. The overlaid information would allow for constant tracking and quicker time to engage single and significant time savings to engage multiple targets.  For this program, CMC will build off the extensive experience in weapon mounted AR applications to increased users’ situational awareness and display hardware development in optics, patented Imageguide®, software/firmware, electronics, and mechanical hardware to produce a low power, flexible interface to receive data and display the selected information to the clip-on display. Included in this effort will be the integration for receiving and displaying AR data to provide information overlays based on received information.
