Research abstract

The ISS team has extensive experience designing and producing low-power electro-optical imaging solutions with micro-displays. For the Digital Projection Close Quarters Sight SBIR Phase I, ISS proposes to conduct a feasibility study to create a "Weapon mounted Augmented Reflex Projector" that uses a two-dimensional micro-display combined with a low-power microcontroller unit to replace the traditional point light source in reflex or red-dot sights. This sight will permit operators to display a plurality of iconography onto a unity magnification see-through optics and select a variety of reticles that can be boresighted electronically instead of using mechanical adjusters to create a true athermal close quarters sight. The digital display with a microcontroller will also permit the proposed sight to connect with many external devices, through either wired or wireless interfaces, such as a laser range finder, to project ballistic solutions and disturbed reticles directly into the operator's field of view. For this proposed effort, ISS will perform a market survey of commercially available sub-components to achieve the desired resolution, luminosity, power, and athermal characteristics as part of this feasibility study for the Digital Projection Close Quarters Sight. ISS will use this data to perform a thorough conceptual design and trade analysis, validate its results using laboratory measurements, and provide the customer with a detailed report outlining the results and feasibility of developing this sight. At the completion of this Phase I development, ISS will deliver a system requirements document, and preliminary system specifications for the "Weapon mounted Augmented Reflex Projector," in addition to the feasibility report. This system requirement document will include an electronic block diagram, theoretical optical design, and conceptual system packaging for the "Weapon mounted Augmented Reflex Projector". ISS proposal Period of Performance for this Phase I SBIR is six (6) calendar months.
