Research abstract

Battery energy storage has become critical in military operations due to the growing power and energy needs of soldier-portable electronics, military vehicles, small unmanned aerial systems (UAS), and other equipment for expanded mission capabilities. However, current rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) present several challenges, including relatively low energy density, limited performance at extreme temperatures, and the need of extensive thermal management. To address these limitations and meet the Army’s requirements, Lynntech proposes the development of high-energy Extreme Wide Temperature (X-WiT) Lithium Metal Batteries (LMBs). These batteries will feature high-energy lithium anodes, high-energy/high voltage single crystal nickel-rich Lithium-Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt-Oxide (NMC) cathodes, and X-Wit Electrolytes (X-WiT-Lytes). This combination is designed to deliver batteries with high energy density, high power, and long cycle life, capable of performing across a wide range of temperatures. In Phase I, Lynntech will focus on designing, preparing, and characterizing X-WiT-lytes, as well as fabricating and testing Li/NMC full cells including pouch cells with capacities exceeding 0.1 Ah. Additionally, an initial prototype battery design will be developed. In Phase II, Lynntech will further optimize the cell components for improved performance and demonstrate prototype high-energy X-WiT LMBs with capacities greater than 1 Ah. Lynntech will also collaborate with a battery manufacturer to develop a technology transition and commercialization plan for both DoD and commercial markets.
