Research abstract

The Department of Defense (DoD) faces increasing challenges in developing and procuring uncooled longwave infrared (LWIR) camera components that meet stringent military standards. As the cost of custom thermal optics rises, program managers are forced to make difficult trade-offs between critical performance parameters, such as field of view (FOV), resolution, framerate, and dynamic range. Current microbolometer Readout Integrated Circuit (ROIC) technologies often limit the ability to achieve the necessary balance between these factors, particularly for a range of applications requiring moderately wide field of view (WFOV) sensors capable of tracking small, dim objects across vast areas. áCircle Optics proposes a revolutionary approach to mitigate these challenges through a novel lens design technique that enables the implementation of a distributed aperture system (DAS) where all entrance pupils are co-located. Our solution leverages commercially available, off-the-shelf image sensors to create a highly efficient and cost-effective system that meets the stringent requirements of modern Army applications. By eliminating the need for expensive custom sensors and reducing the overlap between fields of view, our approach minimizes data redundancy and enhances overall system performance.á
