Research abstract

40174 November 8, 1996 ADA Technologies, Inc. The Department of Energy (DOE) owns and operates a number of facilities that are contaminated with chlorine containing hazardous materials. The cleanup of these sites is a DOE and national priority, and a variety of technologies are being used to reduce the volumes of the wastes. However, as a result of the remediation activity, chlorine-containing Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs), such as hydrogen chloride (HC1) and chlorine (Cl2), may be emitted. Continuous Emissions Monitors (CEMs) are needed to identify and quantify these HAPs in order to assure the protection of the environment and public health. This project will develop an inexpensive analyzer to measure concentrations of HCl and Cl2 during site remediation activity. Phase I will optimize the major CEM components to provide a minimum detection level of 1 ppm. In Phase II, a pre-production CEM prototype will be fabricated and tested. Anticipated Results/Potential Commercial Applications as described by the awardee: DOE site cleanup programs and a number of commercial facilities will benefit from the CEM development. Commercial industries needing the proposed CEM include hazardous waste treatment, municipal waste combustion, fossil fuel combustion, and any facility using chlorinated solvents.
