Research abstract
JBSA services more DOD students than any other installation, more active runways than any other installation, houses the DOD's largest hospital and the only level one trauma center, they support more than 208K personnel and a student population exceeding 138K annually, with 28 Access Control Points (ACPs) onto JBSA locations (Lackland, Ft Sam Houston, Randolph, or Camp Bullis). These ACPs experience high volumes of traffic Mon-Fri (0600-0830); (1100-1300) daily. There are additional high traffic periods in support of weekly graduations on (Wed and Thu) on Lackland and Ft Sam Houston, along with frequent ceremonies that contribute further to traffic congestion at the ACPs. Addressing critical issues related to gate congestion will ensure better allocation of security forces personnel, expedite entry/exit to JBSA for personnel and visitors and add another layer of security. DECS will streamline base access by leveraging innovative technologies, such as geolocation, advanced sensors, and artificial intelligence (AI) enabled cameras ensuring efficient handling of high-volume traffic during peak and off-peak (special events) hours, by providing real-time guidance to vehicular traffic based on proximity, traffic conditions, and wait times. DECS will significantly reduce congestion at ACPs, enhancing overall operational efficiency, and the ability to better manage the security. This optimization of traffic flow not only minimizes delays but also contributes to a more organized and predictable access process, benefiting everyone on base.DECS plays a crucial role in enhancing base security. By detecting and reporting unauthorized pedestrian and wrong-way vehicle entrances, the system provides critical data to security forces operations. This capability ensures that security force personnel can respond quickly to potential threats, thereby improving the overall safety of the base. The comprehensive approach to traffic and security management by DECS not only maximizes the efficiency and security of base access but also demonstrates a commitment to leveraging innovative technology for enhanced operational effectiveness and user experience.
