Research abstract

In the absence of GPS, there is no single sensor that can meet the Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) needs of all military missions in all operating environments. In order to pace the evolving threat brought forth by enemy counter-PNT operations, modular open PNT systems that enable innovation and the capability to rapidly upgrade to meet mission requirements in challenged environments are necessary. IS4S proposes a PNT architecture using pntOS as a PNT application space hosting pluggable PNT and integrity algorithms to meet the need of a modular open architecture assured PNT hub. Data sent to the PNT hub will follow the All-Source Position and Navigation (ASPN) data standard.  Sensors not natively supporting the ASPN data standard can be converted via an adapter that sits between the physical sensor and pntOS or withing the pntOS transport plugin. An important part of any modern military PNT system is the ability to ensure that faulty measurements can be identified and rejected.  PNT hub will take a modular approach to integrity called “Autonomous and Resilient Management of All-Source Sensors” (ARMAS). ARMAS is a framework for doing integrity within a system, and a modular software architecture like pntOS is an ideal way to implement ARMAS.  The modular framework of the PNT hub provides a baseline level of PNT solutions and integrity and enables multiple entities to collaborate and insert their own PNT and integrity algorithms creating a system that facilitates innovation and the rapid deployment of cutting edge PNT technologies.
