Research abstract

Batteries have become a necessity in the field of battle, especially for man portable power to electrify mission critical devices such as (communications, weapons, sensors, optics, and equipment). This need for high power and high energy batteries is exacerbated in extremely cold applications where current lithium ion batteries are unable to provide adequate power. This need is critical when considering the range of challenging environments with artic conditions (e.g., high elevation or high latitudes). Without this reliable energy storage system, key missions that depend on operating electrical devices can fail resulting in loss of life.ááCornerstone Research Group has developed a lithium metal (Li-metal) battery cell chemistry for high energy and low temperature applications. Utilizing a Li-metal anode, high energy density cathode, and an advanced low-temperature electrolyte, CRG demonstrated a cell that maximized charge/discharge kinetics while maintaining high energy and power density. CRGĺs advanced Li-metal cell has an energy density of >300 Wh/kg, >80% capacity retention at 9C, able to discharge at -60░C with >50% initial room temperature capacity, and can effectively cycle at -20░C. CRG is actively looking to transition this ground-breaking cell chemistry into man portable packs (e.g. CWB, BB2590, STUB) for the DOD. The Ultra-Low Temperature Rechargeable Li-Metal Battery will enable mission critical equipment for the soldier even in the harshest of environments.
