Research abstract

A challenge faced by the US Navy is responding to the increased rate of systems development actualized by implementing DevSecOps processes. The increased rate of development in turn increases the verification, validation, and accreditation efforts required. This challenge is particularly impactful to the Navy’s Submarine Warfare Federated Systems (SWFTS) program. SWFTS consists of many subsystems supported by multiple program offices compounding the challenges due to the distributed nature of SWFTS development and testing. This Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) initiative aims to integrate real-time edge analytics capabilities using Mission Based Modeling directly into the SWFTS Common Computing Environment (CCE) reducing the level of effort required for verification, validation, and accreditation. Research and development performed on this SBIR will be done with collaboration from Navy SMEs from the SWFTS Systems Engineering & Integration (SE&I) team, SUB-S, and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC). The real-time edge analytics capability is expected to consist of a Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) solution for capturing SWFTS system behavior that automates the collection, analysis, and reporting of Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) during SWTFS testing. Research will be performed on the feasibility of developing the capability as a containerized Platform as a Service (PaaS) tool, allowing for direct integration into the SWFTS Common Computing Environment (CCE). Integrating edge analytics into the CCE allows seamless use of the capability in platform environments, cloud environments, and integration labs.
