Research abstract

SK Infrared (SKI) is proposing to develop an infrared focal plane array (IRFPA) based on SiGeSn alloys to integrate onto silicon read out integrated circuits for the next generation of surveillance capabilities in the Air Force (AF). The proposed effort will demonstrate an imaging capability focusing on building IRFPAs for optimal performance at cost. FPAs are a critical component of the imaging system, therefore the need for low-cost solutions such as silicon-compatible SiGeSn alloys provide a path for enhanced performance and imaging in the short-wave infrared wavelength region. During our Phase I effort, the team successfully demonstrated SiGeSn detector operation with good photo response at the desired short-wave infrared target wavelength and operating temperature. The proposed effort builds on this promising technological advance to deliver an array for testing at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and provide a first-hand assessment of this technology through a FPA prototype. Moreover, the team will push the technology in terms of sensitivity by further reducing dark current at the operating temperature and demonstrate a scalable manufacturable methodology for FPAs that can be integrated into future surveillance systems.
