Research abstract

The Department of Defense (DoD) confronts a formidable challenge in managing obsolescence within its microelectronics ecosystem. Rapid technological advancement coupled with long procurement cycles leaves military systems vulnerable to the obsolescence and unavailability of critical components, jeopardizing system availability and reliability. Moreover, the globalized nature of the supply chain exposes the DoD to risks such as supply disruptions and counterfeiting. To mitigate these challenges, the DoD must adopt proactive strategies, including technology refresh initiatives, supply chain diversification, standardization efforts, and investments in domestic manufacturing and R&D. Establishing obsolescence management programs and fostering collaboration with industry partners is crucial step towards ensuring the resilience and sustainability of microelectronics in support of national security objectives.
