Research abstract

The Navy has identified the need for an innovative networking platform capable of real-time relay of damage control (DC) crew health status and location/movement during DC activities regardless of their physical locations throughout the ship. To address this need, Architecture Technology Corporation (ATCorp) proposes an innovative technology called Wearable Intelligent Networking for Navy Emergency Response (WINNER) to provide an efficient, robust and secure multimedia communication capability for DC responders in the shipboard network environment. The WINNER approach will overcome the limitations of the current approaches for DC communications aboard the Navy ships and offer the following advantages: 1) automated tracking and efficient communication of actionable DC crew information to shipboard command nodes seamlessly over shipboard wireless communication systems; 2) robust transmission of real-time data streams through metal bulkheads without requiring structural modification to shipboard infrastructure; 3) proven, low SWaP-C cybersecurity enhancements to ensure secure delivery of sensitive information to incident commanders whenever and wherever they need it throughout the ship. The WINNER software technology will be developed to operate within the existing shipboard network infrastructure, providing a cost-effective solution to effective DC information sharing aboard US Navy ships.
